/ Choosing Unifor

Unifor – The Road Transport Union

Unifor is the transport union in Canada.

We represent more than 25,000 members in the road transport sector from coast to coast, as part of a powerful network of 320,000 workers nationwide — the largest private sector union in the country.

In Québec, we know what drivers go through. Whether it’s long-haul trucking, home delivery, or local transport, Unifor represents every kind of driver.
Together with our members, we’ve negotiated strong working conditions — better wages, bonuses, and respect for working hours — at DHL, Remy Martin Transport, Goodfellow, Autobus Brault, and many others.

Tired of wondering if your employer is allowed to do this or that?
With Unifor, there’s no more guessing. Your rights are clear and respected.
Behind every member stands a team of labour relations experts ready to inform you, support you, and take action when needed.
That’s what a real union does. That’s what Unifor does.

By joining Unifor, you strengthen your bargaining power and gain access to:

  • pay raises

  • a better retirement plan (Fonds de solidarité FTQ)

  • more paid leave (vacation, sick days, etc.)

  • recognition of your seniority

  • improved workplace health and safety

  • shift and department premiums

About Union Dues

No surprises: union dues only begin after your collective agreement is signed.

Plus, they:

  • are only deducted from hours worked

  • are not taken from bonuses or overtime

  • are not deducted from the pay of members on sick leave (work-related or not) or unpaid leave

  • are only deducted from hours worked for members on pre-retirement

/ Your rights

The law protects you

You have the right to join a union and fight for better working conditions without fearing any repercussions in your workplace — whether from your employer or your colleagues.
Union membership is 100% confidential — did you know that? This means your employer has no way of knowing who has signed a union card. The law protects you every step of the way.

Both Canadian and Québec labour laws recognize your right to belong to a union, as well as to take part in its formation and activities. They also prohibit any form of intimidation, threats, or retaliation against any worker who chooses to unionize. From the moment a group of workers requests certification, the employer can no longer change wages or working conditions.

The right to unionize is a fundamental right in our society. Labour laws are in place to ensure that you can exercise this right safely, freely, and confidentially.
Here are some of the key legal protections in place:

Free and voluntary membership Confidential process Protection of working conditions
It is illegal to intimidate or threaten someone to make them join, avoid joining, or leave a union.
This rule applies equally to your employer and to the union.
No one will ever know who signed a union card. This information is protected by both law and the courts throughout the entire unionization process. Once the accreditation request is filed, your employer is not allowed to change your working conditions (such as wages, schedules, or benefits) without the union’s written consent.

How it works

Don’t worry — we’re here with you, for you, every step of the way through the union certification process.

  1. Signing your Unifor membership card
It all starts with your signature — confidential and protected by law. You can sign a physical card with a recruiter or complete the process online yourself.
When you sign your membership card, a $2 payment is required. This is standard in any unionization process in Québec, regardless of the union. This symbolic amount formalizes your commitment to joining the union.

  2. Submission of cards to the Administrative Labour Tribunal (TAT)
Unifor submits the signed cards to the TAT, where they are quickly verified for validity.

  3. Freeze on working conditions
Once the membership cards are validated, your current working conditions are protected throughout the negotiation period.

  4. General assembly and election
Take part in electing the representatives who will defend your interests.

  5. Start of negotiations with your employer
This is where things get real — it’s time to claim what you deserve!

  6. Vote on the agreement
You and your coworkers decide whether to accept the negotiated terms.

  7. Implementation of the collective agreement
A new chapter begins for you and your colleagues!

We encourage you to keep the unionization process confidential.

If word starts to spread that employees are organizing, expect your employer to suddenly try to win you over with new perks or promises. These gestures are usually temporary and purely strategic, meant to make you hesitate or second-guess your decision.

Stay alert and united. Keep your eyes open and document any suspicious actions from management.
